US equity research is cautiously constructive over the next year, but with real near-term downside risk and a widening gap between AI earners and AI spenders.
The bull case, echoed across much of the published research this week, rests on Q3 earnings growth tracking above 30%, led by energy, tech and communications. Some analysts add that extreme fear readings and record put volumes, plus strong post-midterm seasonality, set up a tactical bounce. A competing camp warns the market is dangerously concentrated in AI capex whose growth rate is decelerating, with hyperscaler free cash flow weakening and technical signals turning negative. One recent note downgraded tech to market weight on stretched valuations.
Researchers also flag rotation into defensives — healthcare upgraded, materials cut — and pressure on small caps from widening high-yield spreads. On single names, the published consensus rewards visible AI monetization (Alphabet, Apple) over heavy spenders yet to prove returns (Meta, Microsoft).
Horizons explain most of the disagreement: bearish calls are tactical, bullish ones are cyclical.
