European rate watchers are leaning toward more tightening ahead, though the near-term action looks concentrated at the ECB and the Bank of England.
The published research consensus is that no ECB move lands this week, but markets are already pricing roughly 23bp of tightening by December. One strand of analysis flags a high probability of a 25bp December hike that would lift the deposit rate to 2.75% — formally restrictive territory. Researchers point to eurozone inflation hitting a three-year high in September, driven by energy and rising across all four of the bloc's largest economies, with the ECB having already hiked twice.
On France, one camp of analysts argues 10Y French yields should drift lower: fiscal tightening looks likely whatever the political outcome, the ECB stands as buyer of last resort via reinvestments and backstop tools, and domestic banks and insurers have room to add. The same researchers float a speculative wider France-Bund spread trade around budget risk — heavy rollover needs and a 5% deficit — but explicitly flag it as a punt, not a core view.
