Copper's setup looks bullish, according to recently published research — though the case splits cleanly by time horizon.
The structural argument, advanced by several analysts, rests on a global capex boom and tight supply. One published view frames copper as a multi-year strategic long, with constrained mine output running into rising demand from electrification and infrastructure.
A second strand of research adds a cyclical layer: copper is trading near record highs and increasingly moves with AI-linked equities. The reasoning is concrete — data centers and AI infrastructure are copper-intensive to build out, so the metal has effectively become a play on the tech investment wave.
That same research flags the main downside risk, and it's conditional rather than a base case: if the Nasdaq, S&P 500, or broader AI rally rolls over, copper likely gets hit too.
So the bullish and bearish views in circulation aren't really in conflict — one is a structural long, the other a tactical risk flag tied to whether the AI trade holds.
